大家帮忙看看有没有偏题吧。实在拿不准自己的思路。

3.  “Corporations and other businesses should try to eliminate the many ranks and salary grades that classify employees according to their experience and expertise. A ‘flat’ organizational structure is more likely to encourage collegiality and cooperation among employees.”Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

What is the best organizational structure for a business, a “flat” organizational structure or a traditional one? The speaker prefers a “flat” organization, which is more probably to foster collegiality and cooperation in a corporation. Although a “flat” organization does contribute something to business operation, I strongly disagree with the speaker’s view, for two reasons.

Firstly, the speaker asserts that collegiality and collaboration among employees are more likely to be restrained due to official ranks and salaries grades. However, the speaker ignores that position promotion and salary increase, the integral parts of a good incentive mechanism, are crucial to maintain the corporate competitiveness in the market. Suppose, for example, that a diligent staff, committing 100 percent of his intelligence to the company, gets the same rewards as lazy, perfunctory staffs do. How can we expect that in such a “flat” organization, employee will keep passionate and contribute to the company’s success? Moreover, disagreements in the business are inevitable. Without an authoritative leader to reconcile disputes and come to agreements, the cooperation and collegiality may be undermined, not to mention the productivity and profit.

Secondly, even though we put aside whether a “flat” organization can stimulate collegiality and cooperation, a structure system benefits an organization largely depends on its implementation and maintenance. For example, according to a report from Economics Review, Sunflower Technologies, a multicultural IT company with near 100 percent annual growth within the past years, is now suffering substantial decline in its business revenue, as a result of introducing a “flat” organization. The company has decreased the number of managers and adopted a “salary-equality” policy, in order to produce “collegiality and cooperation”. Yet, staffs feel demotivating and the employee turnover is surprisingly high because of lacking necessary monetary incentive and personal development opportunity. Some may argue that it is a special case without general significance. I would like to emphasize that we cannot rely on a single criteria to justify a business operation, regardless relevant determinant factors.

In sum, the speaker’s opinion that a “flat” organizational structure is the best way to promote collegiality and cooperation among employees violates the common rule in business practices, and in any case provides a feeble explanation for the preference of one organizational structure over another.
