Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? High schools should allow students to study the courses that students want to study. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. It has always been a controversy on should high schools allows students to their own courses. Regarding my own experience as a student in a Canadian high school, I prefer a middle route—having some courses optional on the premise of completing the basic and important courses such as mathematics and language. Firstly, an early determination and study of longing courses help students to set career goal ahead of time. For instance, if I want to have international businessman as my life career, I can register a financial and/or business class. After I complete the courses, I earn the credits and have already obtained essential knowledge before entering the university. This guaranteed my advantages in the severe competition in the university.
Secondly, students’ self-determination emphasizes the freedom in study. This sort of freedom offers students greater opportunities to study want they really desire; thus, they can make more enthusiastic and easier approach to the courses. Consequently, this freedom contributes to success.
Finally, students can manage their own timetables to utilize their time efficiently. Hard courses can be blended with easy ones, and courses in the same area can be taken together. This great advantage is the gospel to those who feel study is too intense or hard to manage. Although system of course taking in Canada varied among provinces, the base is that students have their own choices of courses as long as they can have the major subjects fulfilled. The above evidence well represents the reasons and advantages for this policy by having partial courses optional and others compulsory.
