这里是provide x for y(noun)的idiom (参http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/provide 第一本字典的第8条)

没有provide x to do y的idiom

所以这里y即使是ing形式也不会产生歧义，因为idiom用法决定了这个ing表示一个noun，而不是进行时态。

关键看support 后面的部分
D中用不定式，  provide的主语是evidence，E选项有evidence提供support为了classify的意思，逻辑意思显然出了了问题
如果要选E的话要改成  provides compelling support for us to classify
provides compelling support   for     classifying Africa’s forest elephants and its savanna elephantsas separate species
这里     区分两种象是不同品种 作为一个动名词短语  跟在 for的后面
表述更清晰，使用合理
