话题是:说得好比写得好更重要,是否同意?
Recently, a controversy about whether speaking is more important than writing as communication skills has been brought to public attention. I concede that people with higher speaking ability and limited writing skills, in some cases, are privileged over experienced writers who are not inclined to express orally, there is still no justification to conclude that speaking is advantageous over writing without thoroughly thought over all situations.
Speaking and writing, in fact, share numerous similarities because they are both output of languages, which can be utilized to express one’s opinions and convey one’s emotions. To live in our fully civilized society, both speaking and writing are indispensable, for no one can avoid from communicating with other members. Contrary to their seemingly contradictory relationship, speaking and writhing serve as mutual supplements to each other, because the combination of speaking and writing is the only way to establish a social connection. Let me take the forming process of a contract as an illustration. The first step is to write precise and concise provisions, the second step is to negotiate these provisions, and the last step is to make an agreement. Lacking either of the first two steps, a contract is not supposed to form. Clearly, such interdependent relationship can effectively weaken the argument that speaking enjoys more importance than writing.
Some people might object that speaking and writing are quite different skills although they are both outputs. Moreover, the difference between speaking and writing may be responsible for the distinguished roles they play, which determine that speaking is much vital in social life. Admittedly, differences do exist between speaking and writing, however, their differences, from my perspective, is not striking enough to determine their relative significance. Why I am so confident to maintain this, that is because I’ve uncovered the nature of their difference. As two conversing measures, speaking and writing merely differs in exhibition. That is, speaking is more direct and immediate while writing is more clear and long-lasting. Coordinate with these distinction, speaking, necessitating swift reaction rate,is more widely applied in business areas, whereas writing is more highly required in academia, which calls for preciseness. Nevertheless, speaking is also needed in academia in some circumstances, say presentation and academic conference, similarly, writing cannot be neglected in business areas, when it comes to the contracts and projects. However obvious the difference is between these two skills, their equal status should not be denied because their same nature is unchangeable.
Considering all the factors above, I have strong reason to point out that it’s unfair to judge speaking is more important is more important than its counterpart, writing.
