Employment always lag behind the economy for a while. Most of the internship for this summer was extended last year or early this year when the economy was still in a pretty good shape. Traditionally, US companies don't rescind internship offers. Therefore, those data refects the situation of last year while most of the layoffs happened this year.
If you check the historical data, you'll find that very high percentage of MBA students, even from top 10 schools, couldn't land jobs upon graduation during last recession at 2002, 2003 though the recession officiall ended in 2001. Many more Chinese students ended up going back to China in those 2 years.
IMO, the job market for 2009 and 2010, even 2011 could be very tough. Maybe more difficult than 2002/2003 because the financial sectors are affected much severely this time than the last one.
