Aは不正解。"if"節内で省略される主語が前節の主語"labor"になり意味がおかしい。また、"be able to"の主語は人や組織など意思のある主体以外は認められない。仮定過去"would"は現在の話になってしまう。これはあくまでも過去にそれが出現していたら驚くべきものと受け取られたに違いない、との話。

A错误。if从句中省略的主语从语法上是“labor",句意错误，be able to的主语只能是人或组织，不能是劳动。在现在时与句中出现would，时态错误。

Bは不正解。"despite --ing"は正解にならない。これも"being"の主語が"labor"になってしまい、Aと同様の問題を抱えている。もともと"being"は "of"等の直後や現在進行形の受動態"is being -ed"内部での使用以外は好まれない表現。"would"もAと同様に良くない。

B错误，despite 后面不加doing。而且being的主语是labor，和A同样的错误。being有时直接用在of后，或者is being done，表示现在进行的被动，除此两者之外用法不常见。另外would和A错误相同。

Cは正解。"they"は"many people"を指せるので、"can afford"の主語として適切。"would have found"も仮定法過去完了で、もし昔だったら"miraculous"であっただろう、との意味。これも適切。

In spite of and despite mean exactly the same thing. They also have the same gramatical structures.

• in spite of/despite + -the fact (that), subject + verb, subject + verb
  • Despite the fact (that) it's cheaper, the supermarket is further away.
  • In spite of the fact (that) it's cheaper, the supermarket is further away.
• in spite of/despite + noun, subject + verb
  • Despite its cheapness, the supermarket is further away.
  • In spite of its cheapness, the supermarket is further away.

For all of these structures, we can put in spite of / despite in the middle of the sentence: The supermarket is further away despite being cheaper.
