我觉得还是看逻辑意思吧，gathering修饰earth意思上也讲不通阿，所以只能修饰invigator了。

I think this could be extended and interpretated into  sb. do sth. while doing something??

我们说有歧义,是在逻辑意思MAKE SENSE的前提下, 逻辑上NONSENSE的歧义,那叫找茬,不是改错.

不过很多是不是都因为逻辑does not make sense 所以认定是指代错误呢？

I think 'D' is wrong,

1/ normally 'gathering 'modify the 'the earth',

2/ if 'gathering' modify the navigator( although I don't think it can),  the sentence ' like navigators gathering....astronomers ' the subject can't be compared.

' C' looks better,

1/ why 'similar to' can't be put in the beginning of sentence ?

2/ where is OK, although the sentense doesn't state 'gather on earth', we can infer from navigators-definitely they do everything on earth

我也想不通关于D中现代分词结构gathering information的前面没有逗号，为什么不可以理解为修饰其紧邻的earth， 而是修饰主语navigator做伴随状语??看了以上的回答,似乎未能解决.
