The University of Reading School of Construction Management and Engineering PhD Research Studentship in Innovation and Design The School of Construction Management and Engineering is one of the world's leading centres of excellence for research and teaching in the built environment. It is home to the Innovative Construction Research Centre (http://www.icrc-reading.org/) which has an inter-disciplinary team of researchers working closely with industrial partners to address practical and theoretical problems. Ongoing research on innovation and design investigates the roles that emerging digital technologies play in coordinating the design of large building and infrastructure projects; and issues of design quality in large programmes of construction work. In these contexts, managers face new challenges associated with changing technologies and complex organizational settings. Applications are invited for a studentship in digital technologies and complex organizations, funded by the EPSRC. The student will analyse the use of digital technologies in the coordination of design work, collecting data through observation, interviews and archival work and drawing on institutional and practice-based theories. UK applicants will be eligible for a studentship covering tuition fees, plus a stipend of £12,940 p.a. EU applicants will be eligible for a studentship covering their tuition fees. Non-EU applicants will be eligible for a partial tuition fees studentship of £8,000 p.a. Applicants should have a good Bachelors or Masters degree in management; information systems; sociology; organization studies; design studies or a built environment-related subject, such as planning, architecture, civil engineering or construction management. They should demonstrate some experience or knowledge of qualitative research and an ability to learn new skills. Good team-working, observational and communication skills are essential.
