http://www.econ.upf.edu/eng/graduates/gpem/Alumni.html

The Master of Science (MSc) is a one-year program jointly administered with the Barcelona GSE.

The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) is a two-year program. It has the first year in common with the MSc programme and a second year for field specialisation.

The Master of Research (MRes) is a two-year program also called "Official master". This program is geared to research oriented students with exceptional grades in economics, econometrics and mathematics, and exceptional credentials.

The PhD program is geared to develop students' research skills and independence of thought.

Ph.D - Applications

All students aspiring to complete the PhD programme must first complete the Master of Research in Management. If you believe that your previous studies may give you advanced standing onto the MRes programme

What is the difference between the MSc and the MRes?

The MRe is a two-year program with a strong research orientation. The MSc is a highly flexible and modular one-year program.

The MRe can be an excellent first step for student wishing to follow a research oriented master but coming from other disciplines and for students wishing to get further exposition to the analytical tools of management with the objective to improve their immediate employability.

The MSc is intended to be a practical program oriented towards students planning on a management career.

Do I get a degree after my first year in the MRes?

Yes. All the students of the MRes get the MSc degree upon successful completion of the first year of courses. To qualify for the MRes degree you will need to get 120 credits, which is equivalent to two years (six trimesters) of courses.

Why are the fees of the MRes (called also “Official Master”) so different from the fees of the MSc?

The fees of the students admitted to the MRes correspond with the fees of students who are granted a financial aid package that include a partial (total) fee waiver. Notice that, since the fees in the Official Master are highly subsidized, the admission to the MRes (Official Master) is offered to the strongest applicants to the MSc program.

What are the criteria for MRes admission?

Entry to the MRes program is aimed at students with exceptional grades, and excellent credentials (letters of recommendation, GRE, TOEFL, etc.) . The MRes is a highly competitive research-oriented program that is appropriate for students who, at the time of the application, have decided they would like to continue in the future into the Ph.D. The selection criteria are very strict and only the very best applicants will be granted direct access to the MRes.

Can I organize a flexible curriculum in the MSc?

Yes. The number of compulsory courses in the MSc is small and students can tailor their curriculum to their own needs and interests.

Can I continue into the Ph. D. after I finish my MSc at UPF?

Yes. You can enter the Phd program directly, when you will be put into the second year of the MRes program.

If you do not want a PhD but want to spend another year developing your skills, you can also enter the MAS program.
