答案是D，没有问题，请问如果答案A如果改为“cars' potential energy, gained as a chain drive lifts them" 是不是也对，究竟什么时候应该用's所有格形式，什么时候用of表示所属关系呢？ets是否也有偏好？

这里A的错误不在cars' potential energy or energy of cars. LZM 的语法第三部分里讲了这题，A 的错在於现在分词的被动语态没有表达物体升高，势能增加这个过程。
至於你问的问题，请其他人回答，我不太确定。

基本原则是‘S表示有生命物体的，of表示无生命物体

   不过，这点似乎早就没用了，老美自己有的时候都不这么用

    因此建议不要用这个原则来排除选项

我觉着这里没必要表明一个过程, 就是由于升高产生的能量, 为什么一定要表明过程, 又不是强调势能的增加, 这里只强调一个概念. 这个解释实在牵强

我觉着D也不怎么样, gained 离cars最近, 容易造成歧义, 要是以分词修饰的原则来看, 我觉着D不对,

但是A 是不是有one's being一定错的说法啊?

A的错误在于由于前面是car’energy，所以后面的them没有指代对象。

C的错误在于being lift不受ETS欢迎

答案是D，但我觉得D中的错误，gained 离cars最近, 容易造成歧义, 同意delldell的观点。
