比武招亲：难道没有高手能解答这个题和语法点？

关于下面这道题，我有一个语法点不清楚，希望高手解答。
在使用同位语的时候，不论是主语同位语还是宾语同位语都只能和主语或者是宾语的全部进行同位关系的关联，绝对不能仅仅同主语或者宾语的一部分来进行同位关系的关联。
假设A1'是A1的另外一种说法，我想应该只有以下才是合法的：
A1, A1', do something
而这样的说法我认为是不正确的：
A2 of A1, A1' do something
具体的举个例子
Gorge W Bush, the president of USA, captured Saddam.
上面这个句子，我想每个人都认为它是对的。
但是下面这个句子，我就不认为它正确了：
Solders of USA, the most powerful country, captured Saddam
起码有一点，the most powerful country到底是和USA同位还是和Solders同位就说不清楚。所以我认为这种表达方式是不正确的。

下面这个题目就是大全218题，也存在这样的问题
218. Confused by the many strata and substrata of ancient civilizations overlying one another, Schliemann’s excavations of the fabled city of Ilium, the ancient Troy, were temporarily called to a halt.
(A) Schliemann’s excavations of the fabled city of Ilium, the ancient Troy, were temporarily called to a halt
(B) Schliemann’s excavations of the fabled city of Ilium, the ancient Troy, temporarily halted
(C) Schliemann temporarily halted his excavations of the fabled city of Ilium, the ancient Troy
(D) excavations of the fabled city of Ilium, the ancient Troy, were temporarily halted by Schliemann
(E) excavations of the fabled city of Ilium, and of the ancient Troy, were temporarily halted by Schliemann

答案选的是C。
ABCD都存在同样的问题，把excavations of ***和the ancient Troy同位，这显然是可笑的。只能是the fabled city of Ilium和the ancient Troy才有可能同位。但是E选项显然和题目原来要表达的意思不一样。

请各位上台打擂的同志注意，这个题目我是会做的。只要通过Confused，这个题目就已经只可能选C了。但是这种语法现象是否合法和？

我不知道你这个在gmat里关于同位语的归纳是怎么来的，但我知道无歧义的选项就是被ets认可的选项。你自己也写了，“如果把excavations of ***和the ancient Troy同位，这显然是可笑的”，所以tory就是和city同位，为什么不可以呢？
退一步讲，即使这个是存在问题，但sc是选最好的答案，不是正确的答案，than后助动词不补出也不是一道俩道的题了。
anyway,俺很赞同你的分析归纳精神，继续讨论。

Okey, this is not hard:
  
   Here is my explaination:  when you read "Confused by ", you must realized that there must a person "confused by" right?  its never going to a thing or a subject to "confused by"
   so, only C, start with a name :Schliemann.
  so the answer is C.

同谓语和插入语的一点理解（不一定对）
1.同谓语 同位前面的名词
2.插入语 解释说明最近名词短语

Gorge W Bush, the president of USA, captured Saddam. the president of USA 做同谓语 限定范围表明性质。
The president of USA,Gorge W Bush, captured Saddam. Gorge W Bush 做插入语 解释说明The president of USA这个名词短语

Solders of USA, the most powerful country, captured Saddam.
the most powerful country是插入语应当解释前面名词结构中的名词短语 Solders of USA,因此逻辑意义不通.
the most powerful country如果要做定语修饰USA(根据GMAT语法)应该用省略that的定语从句修饰USA.

但我觉得下面这句话并没有语法和修饰上的错误.

Confused by the many strata and substrata of ancient civilizations overlying one another,Schliemann temporarily halted his excavations of the fabled city of Ilium, the ancient Troy。

Confused by引导原因状语从句...(无争议)
主句: 主语Schliemann + 谓语halted + 宾语his excavations of the fabled city of Ilium, the ancient Troy。
宾语的核心词是 excavations,后面的...of the fabled city of Ilium,the ancient Troy.是复杂的介词短语做宾语的补语修饰核心词excavations.
在补语结构中,又有一个定语结构of+Ilium修饰补语的核心词the fabled city
因此后面的 the ancient Troy可以看作是插入语,就近解释说明前面名词结构the fabled city of Ilium。
