A weight is a number. Weights don't weigh anything!
• A weight can be greater or less than another weight.
• An object/person/animal can be heavier or lighter than another object/person/animal.
楼上是错的， far less than在这里不能做状语，楼上的意思是想说 He came home, exhausted. 这种形容词做状语的形式吗？这个句子在GMAT里面就是错的。这里far less than是个介词性质的词组，无论是prep.词组还是v.ed放结尾都不能做状语的。

I have seen that term, but don't know enough about it to respond authoritatively. The "nominative" term brings to mind Latin noun declension, where nominative = subject noun.
I think something like "Less than 10% of the nation's population lives in cities," might be an example of the less-acts-as-a-noun thing you mention.

"far less than four quarters"在这里是adverbial modifier修饰前面的句子“because it weighs only 8.1 grams”，更准确的说是修饰“weighs”。“less”在这里是副词不是形容词修饰“weighs”的。
把句子写完整一点是这个样子的：
because it weighs only 8.1 grams, far less than four quarters do,
多说一句，因为句子不存在歧义，而且后面要跟which，所以把do省略了。
