A weight is a number. Weights don't weigh anything!
• A weight can be greater or less than another weight.
• An object/person/animal can be heavier or lighter than another object/person/animal.
楼上是错的, far less than在这里不能做状语,楼上的意思是想说 He came home, exhausted.
what is the function of "far less than four quarters".Is it a Nominative Absolute Construction(less acts as a n ) or it is simply a modifier(less acts as a adj)[/quote]
I have seen that term, but don't know enough about it to respond authoritatively. The "nominative" term brings to mind Latin noun declension, where nominative = subject noun.
I think something like "Less than 10% of the nation's population lives in cities," might be an example of the less-acts-as-a-noun thing you mention.
because it weighs only 8.1 grams, far less than four quarters,
"far less than four quarters"在这里是adverbial modifier修饰前面的句子“because it weighs only 8.1 grams”,更准确的说是修饰“weighs”。
because it weighs only 8.1 grams, far less than four quarters do,
