Dinged by Wharton.. need advice on Columbia application...

非常伤心, 被WHARTON 拒了.. 请大家帮我分析一下原因,并建议一下申请的STRATEGY, 以便第二轮其他学校的申请, 特别是COLUMBIA..

本人背景:  G 750, T 免了, 大学GPA3.6, 美国拿到BIOSTATISTICS PHD, GPA 4.0.. 4 YEARS  working experience in leading pharmaceutical company after Ph.D... 我是CAREER CHANGER.. 希望POST-MBA 能做VENTURE CAPITAL 方面的工作, 结合自己的技术背景和MBA 学到的东西做一些BIOTECH 方面的START-UP 的工作..... 在WHARTON 的申请中我也是这样写的... 但现在看来可能申请STRATGY 方面有些失误.. 美国这边是一个很讲究背景的地方...我直接从PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY 过渡到VC 可能比较突兀.... 所以虽然INTERVIEW了, 但没有拿到OFFER.. . 我之前曾经去WHARTON VISIT 过, 当时一个美国人给我说申请方向并不重要, 先尽量拿到OFFER , 进去了之后在仔细了解各个方向, 确定目标.., ....... 我觉得以自己的背景, 如果当时申请PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY 管理方面的更容易成功, 想请较大家的意见??

现在要申请COLUMBIA.. .. 其实自己还是想以后做FINANCE.(IB, HF)... 但我不是FINANCE 背景, 所以申请会很困难... 现在我申请的STRATGY 应该怎么定比较容易拿到ADMISSIION? 哥大的校友们给我点意见ba? 我下周四要去哥大VISIT, 平时也可以去纽约(我在NJ).. 如果哪位校友有时间能不能见面聊一聊... 不胜感激中...我的EMAIL: NJ32070471(A) hotmail.com...

It sould be straightforward and fitting for you.

我现在也有这个打算.. 申请哥大PHARMACEUTICAL 方面的PROGRAM... . 但不知道他们这方面招的人多不多, 希望大不大... 现在大脑一片混乱中...

Sounds like you've put a lot of thought into what the program can do for you.  Have you articulated clearly how you can contribute to the learning experience of others?

I did think about that before... I believe I can contribute by my strong quantitative skills to the group..and with my advance training in mathmatistics and statistics, I think that's fair enough to say......

I guess that your career goal -VC is really bad choice.  Since start-up
is early stage development, what matters most is potential market +tech
feasibility.  Your BIOSTATISTICS PHD + 4 YEARS W/E in leading
pharmaceutical company does not provide any supports (you are a
corporation man working on data analysis).  For biotech VCs, they need
MD or Ph.D in biology field. 

Go to google check "STATISTICS
PHD + MBA + job " (Just forget the BIO- part! You get excelleny
GPA+GMAT) to see where jobs are. (Frankly, you may not need spend
two-years and 250K on MBA);

Thanks very much for your input. Actually.. Quant is the job that might suits for me but I am not so interested in. I have several Quant friends... kind of know what they are doing... that's why I pursue an MBA to avoid analysis and modeling job... I plan to work on my applications on other Top MBA, if not admitted.. then quant might be my only choice...

forgot to mention in my last post... my B.S is biology and transferred to statistics after spenting one-year in Ph.D biology program.... that's why I want to leverage my biology knowledge with my new career choices...... I guess that's really a hard choice..

Go into a top school first! 
So pick an easy story to sell yourself.   (Quan background +Finance knowledge from MBA)
After you go to school, you can change.
