Essay 2. Fit with Stern:

The NYU Stern community is one of our strongest assets. Please answer the following questions about our community:

(a)  What is your personal experience with the Stern community? What actions have you taken to learn more about us?
(b)  How would you contribute to our community as a student?
(c)  How will you benefit personally and professionally from the Stern community?

what does the stern community mean ? Is it a specific organizaion or a general conception ? If I have no experience with it, how could I answer the question ? Can anybody provide some hints ? thanks a lot.

For example, you are amazing about certain research done by stern. Some friends or colleagues recommend you to join Stern and etc.

Sensitive to the fact that applicants targeting Stern may also be applying to other programs that are strong in finance – especially regional peer Columbia – NYU is essentially asking applicants exactly how much homework they’ve done on the school. Obviously, the more information you can provide about trips to campus, visits to classes and conversations with students and alums, the more sincere your interest in the program will seem.

I am a second year student at Stern, so here is some of my understanding.  I just hope that this is not too late for many applicants.

The MBA education has a lot of different components.  Classroom study is only a part of it if not a small part of it.  If you are at school, you will spend a lot of time in other things, like recruiting, social with other students, participating club activities, etc.   I like asupls's definition:  "the community refers to every thing and every one associated with Stern, such as its faculty, students, alumni, clubs, programs, etc". A lot of learning will come from these events and activities besides class.  Different students get different level of reward and satisfaction out of the program because they have different ways of arrange their times and different level of participation.  The essay want to see how you understand: first of all, how the program at Stern and different components (strenght of concentrations, courses, clubs, conferences, alumni network, etc.) can help you succeed in your career goal.  Another aspect is how you plan to participate and how you plan to contribute.  More details will bring a very positive feedback because you seem to have a clear goal of how you will spend your time at Stern and make both you and school more successful.

The ways to know the program, check the school website, read sample essays (hope you can find some), try to talk to current students or alumni, more importantly, think what you really want to do here in terms of your career goal and your personality.
