这道题我也做错了，我在整理题目的时候是这么理解的：
1. 为什么 its后面可以跟 numbers这种复数？ 我忽视了its只不过是一种所有格，比如 my 是 I （单数）的所有格，后面同样可以跟复数，比如 my books
2. 他为什么要用复数？  如果这里用单数的话，出题者可能会考虑到 its指向 前面的extinction， 那么就会引发歧义，所以用 复数
个人看法，没办法，面对正确答案，必须得给自己一个解释，希望大牛能够指正。
