5.简洁性考虑。without any permission 这里的否定和any一般用no来代替，更简洁。当然C中省略了any并不影响句子的意思。
还有是C的语气更强烈。

不多余呀。结构是：
a seemingly permanent accommodation (to what many observers thought ）was  
这个was 是 as 后面这个句子的谓语

to what many observers thought was an economy made overproductive by advances in technology 修饰 accomodation，是补语

正常语序为 many observers thought (that) what was an economy (that was) made overproductive by advances in technology

NO 5, isn't B better than C. choice C is not logical, how can ' on pain of death' be explained? my answer is : nobody can enter the forbidden city without permission except that they risk pain of death. so B is a good answer. what do u think

而且不是mandate on pain of death, 我查不出这样的用法
