但是 in spite of 后面的逻辑主语应该与主句的主语一致

那就是 earnings diminish .......... 怎么理解呢？

我觉得这里是in spite of +n.  diminishing 是 adj 修饰difference. 而不是 gerund. 所以不存在逻辑主语的问题。 况且in spite of 后是很少接复杂结构的。
