And as for most people living somewhere, even they know there is not any god at all, they still pretend they believe that the gods are existent. Because they learn from their experience that once you begin to doubt the existence of the gods, you are stepping into danger. For example, Socrates, the philosopher in a democratic society, was sentenced to death because of his doubt about the gods. However, never think that if Socrates lived in a modern, constitutionalised democracy (e.g. the USA), he wouldn't doubt the existence of 'the gods'.
