double 作动词，主动，被动都可以吗？

白勇 - 用动词表达倍数 double triple, 可用主动语态，也可被动语态，但不能用as搭配.

大全791： The number of undergraduate degrees in engineering awarded by colleges and universities in the United States
increased by more than twice from 1978 to 1985.

(A) increased by more than twice

(B) increased more than two times

(C) more than doubled

(D) was more than doubled（C）

(E) had more than doubled

关于D, 大全这样解释：D’s passive verb was... doubled suggests without warrant that some unnamed agent increased the number of engineering degrees

.

到底double 作动词，可不可以用被动，可以用的话，有没有preference用主动？
