[求助]请大家看看98年6月阅读中的这两句话如何翻译？

我做98年6月阅读 第2篇文章的时候遇到难句，自己琢磨不透，请各位帮忙~~

这篇文章是讲对古希腊诗歌特别是荷马史诗研究的一些过程，在文章中第一段，作者提到一种新的潮流产生在1970年之后，而在1935年到1970年间，一些学者的研究导致学者从实际的作品偏离到一些外围的问题，接着，作者讲到：

Scholars produced books about archaeology,about gift-exchange in ancient societies,about the development of oral poetry,about virtually anything except the Iliad[《伊利亚特》(古希腊描写特洛伊战争的英雄史诗, 相传为荷马所作)]and the Odyssey[ 奥得赛]themselves as unique reflections or distillations of life itself-as,in short,great poetry.

以上这句话前半部分还算好理解，但后半部分就很晦涩，特别是其中的as...as,或者就是两个as，还用了破折号，非常费解，请大家帮忙解释和翻译一下，先谢谢大家了~~

接下来，作者又谈到（紧跟上面一句）
The observations of the English poet Alexander Pope seemed as applicable in 1970 as they had been when he wrote them in 1715: according to Pope,the remarks of critics"are rather Philosophical,Historical,Geographical...or rather anything than Critical and Poetical."

紧跟的这句前半句也出现了as...as，中间接了形容词，似乎比上句要好理解多了，而后半句，特别是引号中出现了rather,还有rather...than，这个和平时的用法很不相同，顿时有点晕，请问各位应当如何翻译为好？

我在百度知道里问了，一个17岁的女孩做了如下的回答

上面的翻译已经很不错了，我就来稍稍解释一下句子的语法构成吧。虽然算是竭尽全力了，但是还是觉得很难解释清楚，所以要麻烦你耐心看了。 :-P

第一句话的后半部分里面的两个"as"在结构上可以看成是比列的，也就是说两个as以及后面紧接的内容之中，随便扔掉一个，句子的大体意思仍保持不变，也就是说unique reflections or distillations of life itself和great poetry两者的意思是一样的，又因为破折号右说明前文的用法，而in short 又是简而言之的意思，所以说great poetry是前者意思的浓缩概括，而前者即是great poetry的一个定义。

as这个词本身在句子中的意思应该是“作为”，句子就是说学者写了各种各样的书，几乎所有方面都写过了，就是没有写直接关于作为反映生活的精华，作为伟大诗歌的Iliad和Odyssey的书。

第二句的两个rather是不同的用法，两者之间没有特别的联系，只是为了表达特定意义而刚好放在一起使用而已。第一个rather的意思是“很，非常”，是说评论极具哲理性什么的，第二个跟or一起，or rather可以理解成“或者说”。 or rather anything than critical and poetical 可直译成 “或者说（评论具有）除了批评性和诗歌性的任何特性”，所以楼上那位意译成“根本就不是评论性的和讨论诗歌的”是很到位的。

写了这么多，自己都有点晕了。这两句感觉很像SAT的阅读部分。不过既然是LSAT的话，应该会更难吧。加油啊！
