ISSUE 36 The author criticizes that people have overemphasized the importance of teamwork in businesses and organizations and advocates that organizations should let the most capable people make things done because those people are more committed and energetic than other people .Although the argument seems to be reasonable at first glance, it requires second thought and I think the argument is false because it overemphasizes the role of personal capability in organizations.
First, teamwork is the way that businesses and organizations are organized and operated. One can not set up a big company or organization all by oneself .For example, even in a small e-business company, some people are responsible for contacting customers on line or by telephone while others are in charge of building and sustaining the website which customer visits everyday and there are people doing the overall management work. This simple example shows us that people cooperate to set up and run the company. If people do not work in teams, the company would not be able to thrive and people will grow crops by themselves alone in the field. Therefore, cooperation and teamwork is the nature of businesses and organizations and the way they exist. Denying teamwork is somewhat equal to the denying of the organizations themselves.
Second, even if the capable people can take charge of many things because he or she is more committed or more energetic, the one is after all human being and human being has both physical limits and mental limits .Therefore, even if one person is very capable of doing everything , one can not expect this "superman" or "superwoman" to make everything done all by him or her alone. This superman/superwoman needs assistance to help with some trivial work such as documentation and they will form a team with those assistants.
Last but not the least, different people have different talent and the most effective way to run a business or an organization is to exert everyone's talents to serve the organization. Therefore, teamwork is the best way to achieve efficiency and best performance within the organization.
In conclusion, teamwork is more important in the organization than a capable person. One needs to cooperate with other people to work together and help the organization to achieve the best performance. |
