请问这句话怎么翻译?

如果变为主动语态好像没有主语啊?

不懂

我觉得这个such+n有一定道理。

就比如说这个such firm,究竟是哪个firm?必定前文有所交代

Snazzy的总结:

1, require sb to do sth

He require me to pay $10000 to him every year.

2, require that + subjective mood (don't use SHOULD, only a verb)

He require that I pay $10000 for him to study in America every year.

3, sth1 (be) required of sb. to do sth2. OG181.

Financial assistant is required of me to study in America.

4 ,require of sb. that-clause. OG109

I require of him that $10000 be paid for me to study in America every year.

请批评指正!

我觉得正常的语序应该是:

"firms require the enormous research and development expenditures to survive

当 require 用于被动语态,同时require的逻辑主语也存在的话,应该是

x require y to do (主动)

y required of x to do (被动, required词组修饰y)

og的解释里也提到了such firms需要有所指代,但不一定要这个名词出现,逻辑上对等就可以了吧

of firms 和 required ... 短语都是修饰前面的expenditures 的,如果把of ...紧跟在expenditures
后面,其后的required...会引起歧义,所以是这样的顺序。

我以前读论文的时候看过类似的句子,很有印象。

分析的真好

Re: require from vs. require of

I would say "from". Usually I would place it after the object: "The client will require all plans ... from the architect." Placing it before the object sounds more formal, although that wouldn't seem inappropriate in this context, so you can do it either way.

I think "of" is usually used with "require" when it is used with a person as the object; for example, "What do you require of me?", or "I wish Jake would do what is required of him." (When the action is specified in the same sentence, though, "of" is not used: "I require you to water the plants.") Also note that I think this construction with "of" is only used when it is an action that is required, not a thing. In other words, "What do you require of me?" is a more formal way to ask, "What do you need me to do?", but not "What do you need me to give you?".

hi, Christina, thanks for ur message. here is the point:
1, require sb to do sth
2, require that + subjuctive mood(don't use SHOULD, only a verb)
3, require sth of sb

u must be familiar with 1 and 2. so i only explain what 3 means
here, sb 是宾语sth的逻辑主语, eg, You required some suggestion of me on the usage of the verb require. Here, it's I who will give u the suggestion. Got it? Pls feel free to ask.
我觉得:require sth of sb中sth与 sb是一种从属关系,expenditures of firms ,
GG的例子:some suggestion of me ,这里用了a of b的所有格,sb是紧跟其后的to do 的逻辑主语,不是require的宾语sth的逻辑主语。
请Snazzy GG再指教!:)

require of  确实有这个用法啊,而且用语正式的书面语中,虽然一般词典上没有,但是 New York Times上有下面这些句子:

The oath required of the Oklahoma state employers read in part:

In adjusting these provisions, however, tile reserves required of trust companies ...

This is required of us by the agreements that we are party to and that We have signed. This is required of us by the values which bind us together.

有了上面的用法,我认为可以有 require of sb. sth.这种双宾语结构(有贴讨论,附在下面),这样原句的主动态就可以理解为to survive requires of firms R&D expenditures,变为被动态  R&D expenditures are required of firms to survive,其中to survive 作宾语补足语。欢迎指正。

require from vs. require of

Is there any difference? Which is the correct form? Example: "the client will require from the architect all plans..." or "the client will require of the architect...."
Muchas gracias,
Marialex

我担心Solome的分析使得required 和 of firms 失去动宾联系,按照我上贴的理解,firms 作 require of这个动词词组的宾语。

仅仅是我个人的推测,欢迎继续讨论。
