一开始做时，看到not…but结构，就找but后面有没有名词可以跟a "blank slate"对称，结果全都没有，所以我就想说会不会不是not…but句型，而是

the human mind is not a "blank slate"　but instead (human mind) comprises specialized mental mechanisms that were developed to solve

也就是说
        是两个句子由but连结
        省略相同主语human mind

这样的思路对吗?

总算明白了，问题出在but的两个属性上，如果不用连词就有歧义。

关键是74这个句子里的not..but..被长长的插入语隔开，很容易造成but…和插入语并列的歧义；所以加上助动词是为了避免歧义的产生！
