1.关于 not...but.. 参见OG11-104  not is an awkward way to establish a contrast;instead of,rather than,or unlike are more appropriate idioms to express a contrast.

原来的解释是说"And not"用于引导一个对比不如后面的好   刚才翻了翻XDF的笔记，not but > rather than > instead of ，当然"一切皆有可能"，呵呵。

2 关于 by which,Research during the past several decades on the nature of language and the processes by which it is produced and understood ......

句子的主语是research+时间状语+介短，这个by which it is的it指代的是research而不是 原文本来想指代的nature。

如果这里it是指research那么A中的it又是指代research吗？A也不对了。这个题可恶，我那稍纵即逝的青春被它吃掉了若干小时。最后，我还是倾向A的，原因是读了A和C数十遍，读出了一点understood和understandable的感觉。understandable这里比understood更贴切。

总结下前人的讨论

1，make it understandable的被动应该是it is made understandable，it is understood改变了原文的意思

2，produce and make it understandable看似少了一个it，produce and make共用一个it。这样产生了effectiveness的错误，但不是correctiveness的错误。

所以选a

by．．．从句包含两个动词　produced and understood

将其中一个还原得：ｉｔ＇ｓ　ｕｎｄｅｒｓｔｏｏｄ　ｂｙ　ｔｈｅ　ｐｒｏｃｅｓｓ
