把选项D放进来：

During the same period in which the Maya were developing a hieroglyphic system of writing, the Aztec people also developed a written language, not as highly sophisticated as that of the Maya, however, being more pictographic in nature.

这里的not as ... as...成为了主句“the Aztec people also developed a written language,”的一个插入成分，意思变成the Aztec people not as ... as ...，修饰成分当然就错了，正确的应该是修饰language。A选项用it来指代language，从语法上是非常合理的，而且was... and was...很工整。

不知道我的解释LZ能否接受。

感觉是不是要加个（and），因为两个独立的修饰语一块出现，所以是不是要把他们链接起来了？
