一道语法题，百思不得解

请教牛人这个为什么选E。我的理解，rather than 前后应当对称，所以face如果跟early retirement 对称那应当是个名次才对，即facing。如果跟elected 对称那应当放一个过去分词，那也应该是faced，但是放face是什么意思，百思不得其解。

 

A recent study has found that within the past few years, many doctors had elected

early retirement rather than face the threats of lawsuits and the rising costs of malpractice insurance.
