选择:

UT-Dallas, PhD, Operation Management Program in B-School, TW+$1600/m;

UT-Austin, PhD, ORIE Program in ME Dept, Admission;

背景:

现在SUNY-Buffalo IE Dept快读完第一年, 女朋友在UT-Austin.

分析:

UT-Dallas:

优点: 1. 能跟一位牛导师Dr. Sethi 做研究.http://som.utdallas.edu/faculty/faculty_sethi.htm

2. 这所学校这个program近年来的placement不错, 多为在B-school做faculty.(好像大多数商学院博士的出路)

3. 有奖.

4. 开车到Austin 4小时.

缺点: 1. 学校综合排名差, 商学院排名稍好一些50+.

2. 不知我是否适合做faculty.

UT-Austin:

优点: 1. 能和女朋友在一个学校.

2. 这个program的placement也不错, 但多为进industry.

3. 学校综合排名和声誉都不错, 这个program排名也不错, 今年IE 18th.

缺点: 1. 没奖.

以上是我的分析, 但还是不知该如何下决定, 希望大家能多提建议, 谢谢了.

Money is important when you do not want to under the stress of both money and studies. Overall ranking of universities is not vital.

4-hour driving distance is good for you and your gf, otherwise you may have gf-study conflict because of limited time, finally leading you to have negative outcomes on health, emotion, affect,........(based on academic research of work-family conflict). Of course, you also need to consult your gf opinions.

vote for Austin if you gf can financially support you...

Go austin if you are not sure whether you want to be faculty.

If your gf has assistantships, it may cover for part of the expenses.

vote for dallas. the IE program at Austin is quite weak compared to their IROM program at the business school.

dallas is at an ideal location, which matters most if you have the intention to go to industry.
