请教大全902题neither

902.    Unlike the Shiites, who constitute the other major branch of Islam, the Sunnites do not await the Mahdi as a messenger from God, nor do they endow him with divine qualities or immunity from failure in judgment.
(A) nor do they endow him
(B) but they do not endow him
(C) neither do they endow him
(D) and they neither endow him(A)
(E) while endowing him neither

C为何不对?
请看LONGMAN对neither的解释:
synonym nor
The authorities were not sympathetic to the students' demands, neither would they tolerate any disruption.

一个说法, 探讨! neither没有查到有表示加强的作用.
nor
conj.
[用在肯定句后, 内容与主句一致并有所加强, 用倒装语序]也不

He does not do it, nor does he try.
他没有做, 也没尝试一下。

我也是这么认为的,但查了好几本词典,没有找到正式的说法。

neither...nor --> two choices, related, opposite, only

not...nor --> a lot more choices

here if "neither" is chosen, the verb should be opposite to "await"

i don't know, feel like that

it may not be right on the opposite side, i mean, the verb, but, from the example you quote above, it seems like that

neither/nor 来自Merriam-Webster

neither
usage Although use with or is neither archaic nor wrong, neither is usually followed
by nor. A few commentators think that neither must be limited in reference to two,
but reference to more than two has been quite common since the 17th century
literati -- James Sledd>.

nor
1 -- used as a function word to introduce the second or last member or the second and each following member of a series of items each of which is negated
2 -- used as a function word to introduce and negate a following clause or phrase
另外还提到nor做连词的时候还有than的意思,也就是比较的意思
