my 2 cents:

organism's attempt to 代谢化学刺激物,或者使之无害。

render 在这里是动词，使成为，同make的意思，render harmless,the chemical irritant = render the chemical irritant harmless

example: The news rendered her speechless.

难道是render harmless,the chemical irritant是render the chemical irritant harmless的倒装结构？

这个the chemical irritant也不算很长啊，为什么好好的话要倒装呢？

1）attempt是名词，名词优于动名词，>trying

to metabolize, or （to）render harmless, the chemical irritant (= the chemical that is irritating it 罗嗦)

2)metabolize/render是两个动词作用于the chemical irritant

The hyperbation comes from that the sentence first employed in the stucture "metabolize the chemical irritant". In order to express concisely and parallelly, the verb "render" and adjuctive "harmless" combined next to each other.
