答案是A,有人选D, 可是我觉得最合适的应该是E

认为A不对的原因：so...that...结构在that从句中如果没有情态动词则表结果，如果有情态动词则表目的so hard that it makes burrowing difficult or so soft that it could cause，这句话or前面分句没有情态动词，表结果；or后面分句有情态动词，表目的。这个could觉得不合适; 逻辑意思上来讲，为了使隧道坍塌好像不合理。

我觉得从逻辑意思上讲，应该强调这种花岗岩土客观的结果，E. too hard, making burrowing difficult, nor too soft, so as to cause，这里的分词短语作伴随结果状语，so as to 也表示结果，虽然结构有点不平行，但语法上讲是没有错误的，而且逻辑意思上两个分句是对等的。

我認為選E的話，整句句意完全改變。

原意是說: 因為granite soil不會太硬，不至於造成 burrowing 的困難...

但E的意思卻變成: 因為不會太硬，讓birrowing 變得困難...

剛好意思反了。

我認為D為正解。

E中，making it difficult 做结果状语则表示花岗岩使burrowsing变得困难，与原句意思相反。
V-ing状语还可修饰前句句尾名词，E中没有；或者修饰前句主语，则变成花岗岩是花岗岩blabla。
现代分词做状语没有修饰前句形容词hard的用法
