I think the life of PhD depends on personal choice. For example, I work 14 hours per day including weekend but I spend only 5 hours on course works. Most of my time spent on research for further publications because I want to be a professor at a research university. While other classmates only want to work at teaching universities, they do not mind to have zero publications before graduation. So they can spend a lot of time on shopping, sports, eating, and love.

I counted the other day the number of courses we need to do in the 1st year. It's about 13 to 15 depending on how many electives you pick up.

You do 5 hrs because you've done most of them or touched them in your Master? I dont know if 5 hrs for coursework is enough?

I reckon 14 hrs a day is ok leaving 10 hrs to sleep, cook and relax  a little bit.  I don't think people can only sleep 5 or 6 hours. They may do so in some certain days, but cannot do it all the time, can it?

5-6  hours sleep EVERY DAY is quite normal for PhD students.

I sleep 5 hours on average. However, I think age is an important factor because I am over 30. When I was 20, I slept 8 hours.

wztt, most subjects for me are new but not so useful for my furhter research. I do 5 hour course each day and so my GPA of first quarter is below 3.0/4.0. Then my department head, chair professors had meetings with me to discuss the reason for my poor performance, and the staff of Graduate School called me to warn me. Also, I was in the probation list in my second quarter. But so what? My professors have changed attitude to me when my conference paper and journal paper got accepted. When I apply job in the future, no one would focus on my GPA. Publications are my "knife" to show my "competitive advantage".

My attitude for courses: Pass is fine; for research: Put all efforts.

hehe, now I really wanna see u in person and have a chat with you - my dear senior fellow

I absolutely agree with you - no one would care ur GPA, but ur publications !!~~

I also wanna go to a research uni, not a teaching college. I think I probably need to discuss this issue with Chris and asked his opinion about ur attitude, by which I might follow as well.

BTW, I am currently in my undergra final year. I do approximately 14 hrs as well every day and that is enough for me to get a First class degree

This may be a little to the extreme, but point well taken. Course is secondary priority compared with research. Publication is gold.
