HKUST Business School and NYU Stern School of Business
to Launch Joint Master of Science in Global Finance Program

March 9, 2007…The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) and New York University Stern School of Business (NYU Stern) announced today the launch of a joint Master of Science (MS) in Global Finance Program, to be offered in November this year.

The announcement was made as Professor K.C. Chan, Dean of the HKUST Business School, and Professor Edward Altman, Max L. Heine Professor of Finance, NYU Stern, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the presence of Mr. Frederick Ma, Secretary for Financial Services and Treasury of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Professor Roland Chin, Acting Vice-President for Academic Affairs, HKUST.

This is the first joint degree program in which NYU Stern has collaborated with an Asian business school. Teaching will be shared among senior finance professors from both schools which are well-known internationally for their high standards and achievements in finance research.

Mr Frederick Ma said at the launch ceremony that, "The partnership between HKUST and NYU promises synergy for both schools and cities. I am sure this new finance-focused program will provide young professionals with unrivalled chances to enhance and sharpen their professionalism from world renowned professors based in Hong Kong and New York, two major financial markets in the world. Hong Kong welcomes talent to stay and work in our market."

Designed for finance executives in the Asia-Pacific region or for those who require the most up-to-date financial knowledge in their work, the MS in Global Finance Program will feature a part-time format and take 12 months to complete. Classes will be taught equally by faculty from both schools. The bulk of the courses will take place on the HKUST campus, and three intensive learning modules will take place on NYU Stern’s campus in New York City. Graduates will receive one diploma jointly conferred by HKUST and NYU Stern, and become alumni of both institutions.

Commenting on the collaboration, Dean K.C. Chan of the HKUST Business School said, “The partnership with NYU Stern is an important addition to our portfolio of business education programs that caters to high-performance executives based in this region. We hope this collaboration, together with the other world-class programs that we have already developed, will further enhance Hong Kong’s attractiveness to international talent based in the region.”
“The tremendous economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region is transforming the financial landscape, and with that growth has come a burgeoning need for financial talent. We are excited to collaborate with HKUST in developing this talent and to offer finance managers a singular opportunity to hone their skills in both Hong Kong and New York City – two major financial centers,” said Thomas Cooley, Dean of NYU Stern.

Both HKUST Business School and NYU Stern have experience in developing successful international partnership programs. In 1998, the HKUST Business School launched an Executive MBA program with Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. NYU Stern, together with the London School of Economics and HEC Paris, launched the TRIUM Global Executive MBA Program in 2001. Both programs are highly regarded and placed in the world’s top 5 in the latest annual rankings published by the Financial Times.
