To prospective Yale applicants

I actually visited Yale this March. The campus and Yale itself is AMAZING....However,,,,,,i feel SOM is not sharing the same level of resource as other department. Be more accurate, i feel SOM located in a very very small building and forgotten..The facility of the school can not compare to other Yale's school or even some TOP 20-30 MBA with business focus.  So i suggest this is why its yield rate is so slow..International students come to have a dream about getting into the world famous YALE. But when accepted and visiting, figure YALE doesnt equal to SOM.....However, its ranking and international students placement is still very good.

Also, the teaching method of Yale seems very traditional and academic to me. Haven't really link it to the real business world ..After all, Yale itself is very for research and academics, which i persoanlly think it's less important in a MBA program.

PLease correct me if i am wrong and share some thoughts why Yale is good ^ ^! Cause my bf is going to Yale for Phd....wuwuwuw  I want to go to the same school with him....But merely based on my last visit to Yale, i can't convince myself to go ....

Also, i hope more internatioal students can understand the exact pros and cons of SOM before applying..Merely just dreaming of a YALE name and apply is not a appropriate way and it will lower Yale's yield rate as well. Last time the adm officer told me that they have a very serious problem that students oftentime come to apply Yale with a wrong expectation. Not that it is not a good school, but you need to know what to expect and what not to expect from this program. !

1。SOM的设备和硬件的确比别的商学院差一点，地方也显得拥挤。原因是SOM的楼建造的较早，当时设计规模是300人，可是现在已经大大超过了这个设计人数。SOM现在正筹建一个全新的campus，耗资1.5-2亿美金左右，不过可能在2010年才能建成，呵呵。这个新campus的建成将彻底解决硬件问题，每年招生MBA人数也将上升到300人，不过最近两年入学的恐怕无缘享受了。另外，至于你说的SOM和YALE其他院系的比较问题，我了解的情况是这样。SOM是1976年建立的，相对YALE其他院系，时间最短，而且建成之处相当长的时间内，一直以non profit management著称，给人感觉总和商学院不太协调，这样就是为什么以前认为SOM和divinity school是YALE最不被看好的学院。而且，我在BW上也看到过一些评论，这个和YALE的传统有关。YALE历来是个只追求人文学科的学校，它的理科其实一直不错，但理科和工科传统上在学校一直没有地位，这种情况知道93年Levin校长上任后才力图开始改变。Levin认为应该优先发展技术学科和生物医学学科，也投资开始建设这些方面，但从学校的氛围来看，还是人文学科绝对至上，学生甚至把理科专业成为第四类专业。我的意思就是，要改变一个传统的确需要一段时间，YALE的这种人文至上的氛围短期内不可能改变。其实其他商学院也有这样的问题。大名鼎鼎的UC Berkeley，它的商学院是学校的卖点吗，虽然我不太了解，但大家的感觉好像UC Berkeley不是以商学院出名的吧。客观评论，SOM永远不可能是YALE的卖点和最shining的学院（相反，wharton绝对是upenn的卖点,kellogg绝对是NW的卖点）。

2。课程问题。我的确听说过别的商学院的评价，认为YALE SOM非常重视学术，但MBA教学似乎不应该是这样。我不想讨论学术和案例哪个更好。新院长05年7月上任后，第一件事情就是完全改革课程，已经推出了全新的New core course，不再有传统的finance accounting marketing等学科，而着重强调interdisciplinary teaching，在第三模块完全采用case study，具体内容请访问http://mba.yale.edu/mba_admissions/curriculum/default.asp。06年秋季新课程开始使用。与此同时，还推出了alumni mentor program等新的内容。我个人觉得新的课程绝对不是那么academic了，注重soft skills和实用性。就BW上的内容来看，这个新课程得到yale校长Levin的大力支持。

3。关于international student是否应该选择YALE的问题，大家自己看了。我觉得自己在CD上发贴子，一直都是很客观中肯的。我本人非常喜欢YALE大学，这当然是我选择YALE的一个重要原因，而且，SOM的大陆毕业生最近几年就业情况一直不错。我认识两个在纽约的大陆学生即将去SOM的，他们参加了4月份的welcome weekend，对院长、即将入学的新同学和学院整体感觉都非常好。当然，我估计肯定也有觉得SOM不怎么样的，人的判断和意见总是不一样的。

其实如何选择商学院，我觉得无非两点因素：1。毕业后你是否可以一份自己满意的工作，当然除了学校以外，你自己的能力也很重要。如果周围的中国同学都找到好工作了，你失败了，那就不能责怪学校，这是你自己的问题了；2。这个学校或者商学院你是否喜欢。如何衡量是否喜欢，有很多个人的主观因素，比如有些人就是不喜欢哈佛商学院而非常喜欢stanford，比如有些人不喜欢wharton而偏爱columbia，这没什么一定的道理，完全是个人主观的因素，只要你喜欢就可以。

如果你不喜欢耶鲁SOM，或者觉得Yale的排名不如其他TOP学校高而觉得很不爽，或者对毕业后就业信心不足，那千万别申请耶鲁。如果你喜欢YALE的small program，全新的课程，相信中国学生最近两年不错的就业情况（当然，就业这玩意儿是最根本的，不过也是最难以确定的，比如2002年的MBA就业），也欣赏yale的brand name，欢迎申请。请参阅顶楼帖子的一些基本信息。

YALE的商学院建筑很一般，其他学院建筑也一般啊，不知道你BF要去哪个系读书。很多系就是小楼一座而已。我觉得大部分美国大学都那样啊，一个小楼一个系，或者好多个系占一个楼。

我倒是更加关心som门口没好吃的东西卖的问题。

其实，还是有一些好吃的。比如说pizza，new haven是美国pizza的发源地哦。还有龙虾烤鸭吃，已经不错了。就是SOM门口没有而已。

大学非大楼也，中国很多学校进了大学城了，硬件比美国名校强多了，但垃圾还是垃圾，不会因为它撒了些金粉就变成宝贝。

如果觉得SOM寒酸，但整个Yale还是不错的啊。

你的话有道理。其实SOM也不寒酸，这不正在筹建造楼嘛。如果没钱，还造什么新的楼啊，呵呵。

hahhhaaha true..I agree with what you said.. No offense to SOM student.  Apologize first if feel i am attacking ur beloved school. Just hope to discuss this for all applicatns to have a better ideas of different views.

it is true that building and facility is not what make a MBA succeed. However, it did somehow in a way reflect how much resource this program get indirectly. I don't think SOM is poor..I just feel, at least before, they aren't  getting enough attention compare to other departments. ^^ Did you visit SOM before? If you did, yuo will know SOM building..i would say...it's not really a building. it only has 2 floor. And ill-equipped PC center, lack of room for student lounge..And it does not have SOM's own library. They share with social science.  But of course, it will change with the new building done.

SOM has less than i guess...25 of student clubs?  Including all the career-related clubs and activity ones. Of course having over 100 clubs does not mean anything...no students will join more than 4-5 clubs. But it does limit your choices. At least i didn't find one club interest me except one Asian Business club..(sorry..forgot the name @@")  I am not comparing SOM to schools that are not within the same level ..I compare SOM to school with same level. Among Top 10-20

No doubt that Yale whole campus is AWESOME!! It has the best campus of all schools I visited . If you feel Yale's great campus is enough  compensate SOM's own lackness of resource, then it's personal call. Also, i know that SOM students are very very well-connected. Alumni network is really good. And they don't hold campus recruitment in such a board and ""mass production"" way like others. They invited individual corporates to  to small meeting room and have close talk with each student. And their faculty is VERY VERY approachable and supportive. The adm. officer came to the campus that day especially for me to give me a tour even they class has dismissed already! That;s something some schools can't compare.  I personally think one great advantage Yale has is its MBA/JD joint degree. That's really UNCOMPARABLE...Yale Law school is among the world best...that's the fact and truth !

I think the best way for applicants to choose the right school is not denying or ignoring what the school lack..(No school is perfect). It's that applicant should fully understand what the school lack and what make it unique and good. Then choose one school that u think all the goodness outweight lackness!
