UT Austin McCombs MBA Application Essays

The maximum length restriction on the UT Austin McCombs application essays is 2 pages.

1. Explain how obtaining an MBA at the McCombs School of Business will assist you in achieving your personal and/or professional life goals. Why is now the best time for you to pursue this degree? Your explanation should include, but is not necessarily limited to, a description of both your intermediate and long-term career goals, as well as a current vision of your desired employment upon graduation.

2. At the McCombs School of Business, student collaboration and community are essential to the MBA experience. Please research opportunities for student involvement outside of the classroom at McCombs. Discuss one opportunity in which you would like to participate, explain why it interests you, and include how you will add value to that organization/event. If there is no current organization/event that appeals to you, create one of your own and discuss both why it is needed and how you would like to be involved in its implementation.

Examples you may consider include: Preview Weekend, McCombs Connection, the Women in Business Leadership Conference, etc. In addition, our student organizations are listed at: http://texasmba.bus.utexas.edu/students/studentorgs/.

3. Please choose one of the following:

A.   Each of us experiences “defining moments” that can change our lives. Describe such a moment and its impact on you and on your view of the world.

B.    What makes you unique? How will your uniqueness add to the classroom experience at McCombs?

C.  Consider yourself a member of the McCombs Admissions Committee. Evaluate your application from all aspects including quantitative and qualitative measures. This would also be the place to discuss any strengths or weaknesses that you feel need careful explanation.

UC Berkeley Haas School of Business

The following questions are meant to elicit brief yet thoughtful responses of 1 sentence to 2 paragraphs in length:

Describe something you feel passionate about.

If you could have dinner with one individual, past or present, who would it be? Why?

If you could change one characteristic about yourself, what would it be?

Briefly state what you view as your most significant accomplishment. (3 sentences or less)

Describe your greatest professional challenge and how you resolved it.

If you have visited Haas, please let us know what about your visit made the most lasting impression on you. If you have not visited Haas, what steps have you taken to familiarize yourself with our MBA program?

"Main" essay questions
What are your professional goals? How do your past and present experiences relate to those goals? (750 words)

OPTIONAL: Please feel free to provide a statement concerning any information you would like to add to your application that you haven't addressed elsewhere.

OPTIONAL: If you wish to be considered for a Haas Achievement Award (for individuals who have overcome significant economic, educational, health-related, and/or other obstacles), please use this space to address the obstacles  you have overcome. (750 words)

UCLA Anderson Application Essays

Essays should be double spaced.

1. Please provide us with a summary of your personal and family background. Include information about your parents and siblings, where you grew up, and perhaps a highlight or special memory of your youth. (2 pages)

2. Discuss a situation, preferably work related, where you have taken a significant leadership role. How does this event demonstrate your management potential? (1 page)

3. Discuss your career goals and why you want an MBA degree. How will the skills you have developed to date contribute to your effectiveness in fulfilling your post-MBA career objectives? (2 pages)
If you are a concurrent degree program applicant, please incorporate in your answer how the dual program fits your professional interests.

4. (Optional) Is there any other information that you believe would be helpful to the Admissions Committee in considering your application? If you feel the application already represents you well, do not feel obligated to answer this essay question.

UNC Kenan-Flagler Application Essays

Self-Evaluation Essay One (Required)
Please describe your career progression to date, highlighting leadership and management positions and reasons for changing employers or career paths, if applicable. How will your professional experience when combined with an MBA degree assist you in achieving your short-term and long-term career goals? (three pages maximum)

Self-Evaluation Essay Two (Required)

What obstacles or major challenges have you overcome to achieve your goals? How do these life experiences distinguish you from other applicants? (two pages maximum)

Self-Evaluation Essay Three (Required)

Which of UNC Kenan-Flagler's core values - excellence, leadership, integrity, community or teamwork - has been most important in your career development to date? How do you expect this value to contribute to your future development? (two pages maximum)

Optional Essay One

Please tell us about any international experience you have had, either living or working abroad, and how it has impacted your global perspective. (one page maximum)

Optional Essay Two

Kenan-Flagler students have chosen to concentrate in a variety of fields as undergraduate students, and we welcome applications from students who have majored in non-business fields. To prepare for the quantitative dimension of the MBA Program, we strongly recommend that all enrolling students have some background in calculus, microeconomics, statistics and financial accounting. If you have not studied these subjects in college or university, please explain how you have demonstrated proficiency in these areas. If you have not had exposure to these subjects, please let us know your plan for preparing yourself for UNC Kenan-Flagler. (one page maximum)

Additional Information / Explanation Page

The Admissions Committee believes that the MBA application is comprehensive and does not require submission of any supplemental information. If you feel that additional information or explanations are necessary, please use this page for that purpose.

The Wharton School Application Essays

Required Essays for All Applicants
Taking two years to pursue an MBA requires a considerable investment of time and resources. Please describe the path leading to your decision to pursue a Wharton MBA now. How do you expect the MBA experience to benefit you on both a professional and personal level? (1,000 words)

Describe when you were part of a team where the group process and/or intended outcome failed. What was your role, how did you contribute to the process or outcome, and what did you learn? (500 words)

Describe an impact you've had on an individual, group or organization. What did you do? Why has this experience been valuable to you or others? (500 words)

Describe a situation where your values, ethics or morals were challenged. How did you handle the situation? (500 words)

Please identify and explain what you would consider the weakest area of your application. (250 words)

Please tell us something else about yourself that you feel will help the Admissions Committee. (250 words)

Optional Essay:
The Admissions Committee believes the required essays address issues that are important to your candidacy. If there are extenuating circumstances or concerns affecting your application that you feel the Admissions Committee should be aware of, please elaborate here (e.g., choice of recommenders, unexplained gaps in work experience).

Owen MBA Application Essays

Essays: (3 pages maximum length for the first 3 essays)

1. Explain your short-term and long-term career goals. When combined with an Owen@Vanderbilt MBA degree, how will your background, experience, interests and values enable you to pursue these goals successfully?

2. Discuss significant challenges and opportunities currently facing the industry or functional area in which you are most interested. As a change agent and visionary leader, how would you approach these issues to have a positive impact on business and society.

3. Describe any meaningful cross-cultural experiences you have had that highlight your awareness, understanding and appreciation of interacting with people from diverse backgrounds. How have these experiences influenced your interpersonal, communication, and team skills and your desire to pursue a management career?

4. OPTIONAL: You may provide an additional statement to explain poor academic performance, weak test scores, significant gaps in full-time employment, lack of recommendation from your current or most recent supervisor, academic misconduct, violations of the law, or anything else you think is important for the Admissions Committee to know about you that is not already addressed elsewhere in your application.

Darden MBA Application Essays

Use your best judgment for determining the proper length of your essays

1. Specifically address your post-MBA short and long-term professional goals. How will Darden assist you in attaining these goals?

2. The Darden School seeks a diverse and unique entering class of future leaders. How will your distinctiveness enrich our learning environment and enhance your prospects for success as a leader?

3. Describe a significant leadership experience, decision-making challenge, or accomplishment. How did this experience affect your professional and personal development?

4. Pose and address your own essay question.

5. (Optional) Please use this opportunity to present any additional information that would assist the Admissions Committee in the evaluation of your candidacy.

washington-u-olin Application Essays

1. Please explain the ways that you anticipate the Washington University MBA experience will impact your life and your career. (400 words)

2. Please explain how you might have an impact on the MBA Program at Washington University. In other words, what legacy could you leave behind? (300 words)

3. Please respond to any two of the following four questions or statements. (200 words for each question)

a. In his poem, “The Road Less Traveled”, Robert Frost suggests that taking the more difficult path often leads to the greatest or most unexpected rewards. Describe a time when you have taken a “road less traveled” and the impact it has had on your life.
b. In addition to being a leader of the Olin School of Business, Dean Stuart Greenbaum also is known as an expert, or to have an opinion, on many other aspects of life. If you had the chance, what three questions would you ask him? Why?
c. If you were creating the application for admission to the Olin MBA program, what three questions would you ask prospective students? Do not answer the questions, but provide your reasons for asking each of the questions.
d. Suppose that after you graduate from Olin, you would find that your employer has been “cooking the books” (improperly reporting financial information) to increase the company’s stock price. What do you do and why?

4. (Optional) Please feel free to provide any additional information about your application that you believe would be helpful to the Admissions Committee.

Yale School of Management Application Essays

1. The mission of the Yale School of Management is to educate leaders for business and society. In this context, tell us your career goals and your plans for achieving them. Please be specific. Describe how your previous experience will help you to reach your goals. (2 pages)

2. We believe that the best education for leadership in any sector of the world economy is two years of rigorous business fundamentals. This approach to learning will prepare you for any career you might pursue, be it in the business, government, or nonprofit arena. With this in mind, tell us why the Yale MBA program is the right learning environment for you. (1 page)

3. Answer one of the following:

a. Part of leadership is the ability to make a difference under difficult circumstances. With this in mind, describe a situation in which you exhibited such leadership. (1 page)

b. Drawing on current events, discuss the relevance of market forces and government regulation on corporate values. Stake out your position on this issue and support your argument with specific details and examples. (1 page)

4. From a professional standpoint, answer one of the following: a. Describe a risk you too. b. What motivates you? (1 page)

5. (Optional) Is there any information not presented elsewhere in the application or any aspect of your credentials that needs an explanation to help the Admissions Committee understand your candidacy?

Just found Yale's essay changed to just one(??) required essay, which requires 1000 words. The topic is one of 1, 2, 3a & 3b.
