我来试试,记得高中的语法笔记中蛮强调这个区别的.
except是指同类之间的"除了"   eg:  All of us got there on time, except you. 这里的us 和you是同一类事物.

except for是指整体中部分的"除了"  eg: The suit looks good, except for the color. 意思是"除了颜色,这套衣服其他部分都不错". 这里的color和suit不是同一类,是隶属于suit的.所以用except for.

except that后面是接从句. eg: You are a good student, except that sometimes you are late for class.
