Call
Quantative

:-) Thanks for reply! Chicago.
The interest rate for Federal Stafford Loan is 6.8% (private loan will be much higher) and interest will be deductible along the way, but I will take some of my own money to pay the tuition, and try to delay the loan as much as possible, so the accumulated interests will be lower (I will build an EXCEL spreadsheet to analyze the cash inflow and outflow, but always keep some cushion fund in hands, also keep the equity investment lower and more on fixed income thing -- dare not bet on stock market for tuition).

Hope my next step job after MBA is also above 100K, but I am open to a lower starting compensation package as well (that may happen, either due to ecomony, or since I change the job function, although not the industry)... God Bless Me, and other friends as well... :-)

Thank you for your sharing!

However, when using equity financing, we should still consider the cost of equity. In your case, the discount rate might be the required rate of equity. Tax deduction is an angle, can we chinese make use of it (of coz after registering some program)?

God bless you and enjoy the journy!

You bet... :-) Actually, in my case, I will use both debt and equity, so WACC is considered.

As far as I know, student loan interest is tax-deductible (You can check on the IRS Form 1040 for permanent residents and citizens -- at least I used this form and saw the rule before). Also if you pay out of your pocket some tuitions, it is also deductible, but has some income limitations on that. For international students, the tax law may be different, but if you work in US for a while, you will be able to use that even if you are not PR or Citizen yet (I remember it is 5 years in states).

dtiger, I agree that the student loan interest and tuitions are tax-deductilbe. But since you probably will be out of work, there's no income tax for you to deduct.

However, if you have 401K or IRA, I have a good news for you. You can transfer your 401K to IRA account, both of them are pre-tax. Then you can transfer your $ from IRA to Roth IRA, which is taxable. The trick is since you will not have any income in next two years, you can avoid the tax you should pay when transfer $ from normal IRA to Roth IRA. i.e. if you have $60K in 401K, you can plan to have it transfer to IRA and then Roth IRA, then you will have that $60K TAX-FREE!

You probably cannot use the Roth IRA for consumption needs, but you can use it for down payment for your next home!

Why don't you condier part-MBA in Chicago? Of course, I appreciate your courage to be full time by quit 100K job. Since I'm in the similar case as you, coming to U.S more than 7 years, with Green Card, more than 100K job, what I'm chosing is going for part time MBA in NYU.
