答案选A,但没明白这是考的什么语法点,句子的主干应该是area is that of understanding the role吧.

同意。我认为考的是逻辑意思。只能说idea is idea of...不能说 idea is understanding

我用GOOGLE搜了一下，a book by的用法很多。具体原理我也不知道。

省略。 主语的比较，把相同的谓语省略了。
