885-19-7.
Research during the past several decades on the nature of language and the processes that produce and make it understandable has revealed great complexity instead of underlying simplicity.
(A) that produce and make it understandable has revealed great complexity instead of underlying simplicity
(B) of producing and understanding it have revealed not underlying simplicity but great complexity
(C) by which it is produced and understood has revealed not underlying simplicity but great complexity
(D) by which it is produced and understood have revealed great complexity rather than underlying simplicity
(E) by which one produces and understands it have revealed great complexity instead of underlying simplicity

Answer is A. But what is wrong with C?

The gyrfalcon, an arctic bird of prey, has survived a
close brush with extinction; its numbers are now
five times greater than what they were when the use
of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970's.
(A) its numbers are now five times greater than what they were when
(B) its numbers now fivefold what they were when
(C) its numbers now five times more than when
(D) now with fivefold the numbers it had when
(E) now with its numbers five greater since

Answer A. Agree. 只是觉得what they were有些怪.

its numbers are now five times greater than (its number were) what they were when ...
its numbers are now five times greater than (its number were) when ...

Sometime, when the comparision is between the same subjects ("its numbers"), we can omitted the second subject and its verb.

" processes by which it is produced and understood"
"by which" lead 非限制性定语从句, where is the comma (,) before it?

Plus, in " processes by which it is produced and understood", passive voice is used, not as good as the active voice expressed in A.

现在就剩下produce and make it understandable这个结了,ETS的用意、居心到底何在?

(A) They used profits made from selling the strawberry crop to hire other Issei.
(B) They negotiated such agricultural contracts using the “boss” system.

They made the surprising discovery that the level of calcium in the rats’ blood decreased much less sharply than when the parathyroid gland alone was removed.

5.    The passage suggests that the researchers mentioned in the second paragraph who observed anteaters break into a nest of ants would most likely agree with which of the following statements?
(A) The event they observed provides conclusive evidence that anteaters use their electroreceptors to locate unseen prey.
(B) The event they observed was atypical and may not reflect the usual hunting practices of anteaters.
(C) It is likely that the anteaters located the ants’ nesting chambers without the assistance of electroreceptors.
(D) Anteaters possess a very simple sensory system for use in locating prey.
(E) The speed with which the anteaters located their prey is greater than what might be expected on the basis of chance alone.

Her likes and dislikes are less important than what the work itself communicates, and her preferences may blind her to certain qualities of the work and thereby prevent an adequate understanding of it.

3.    When workers do not find their assignments challenging, they become bored and so achieve less than their abilities would allow. On the other hand, when workers find their assignments too difficult, they give up and so again achieve less than what they are capable of achieving. It is, therefore, clear that no worker’s full potential will ever be realized.
Which one of the following is an error of reasoning contained in the argument?

(E) depending on the ambiguous use of a key term

10.    Which one of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?
(A) The public library was located between Glenwood and Redville before being moved to its current location in central Redville.
(B) The area covered by central Glenwood is approximately the same size as that covered by central Redville.
(C) The building that is available in Glenwood is smaller than an alternative building that is available in Redville.
(D) Many of the people who use the public library do not live in either Glenwood or Redville.
(E) The distance that people currently walk to get to the library is farther than what is generally considered walking distance.

3.    The government recently released a study of drinking water, in which it was reported that consumers who bought bottled water were in many cases getting water that was less safe than what they could obtain much more cheaply from the public water supply. In spite of the enormous publicity that the study received, sales of bottled water have continued to rise.
Which one of the following, if true, is most help in resolving the apparent paradox?
(A) Bottled water might contain levels of potentially harmful contaminants that are not allowed in drinking water.
(B) Most consumers who habitually drink the bottled water discussed in the study cannot differentiate between the taste of their usual brand of bottled water and that of water from public sources.
(C) Increased consumption of the five best-selling brands of bottled water, which the report said were safer than both public water and most other brands of bottled water, accounted for the increase in sales.
(D) The rate of increase in the sales of bottled water has slowed since the publication of the government study.
(E) Government health warnings concerning food have become so frequent that consumers have begun to doubt the safety of many everyday foods.

分别是:speed;likes and dislikes;achievement(句中未出现);distance;water。
