9.    In the last few years, the number of convicted criminals given community service sentences, which allow the criminals to remain unconfined while they perform specific jobs benefiting the public, have risen dramatically.

(D) sentences which allow them to remain unconfined in their performing of specific jobs beneficial to the public has
(E) sentences allowing them to remain unconfined while performing specific jobs that benefit the public has

There are some differences between D and E. Can any DaXia tell me which one/ones make E the key?

12.    Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required to survive in the electronics industry, an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand, such firms tend to be very large.
(A) to survive
(B) of firms to survive
(C) for surviving
(D) for survival
(E) for firms’ survival

E) sentences allowing them to remain unconfined while performing specific jobs that benefit the public has  中的performing的逻辑主语是谁?,OG菜鸟手册中对此题的讨论认为“while performing 有省略,省略的主语和remain unconfined的主语一致。

The logical subject of "remain unconfined" is "them", which is referred to "criminals".

OG186 Judge Bonham denied a motion to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than be confined to a hotel.

OG100 Wisconsin, Illinois, Florida, and Minnesota have begun to enforce statewide bans prohibiting landfills from accepting leaves, brush, and grass clippings.
