我就是对 ended speculation that 从句的理解不确定。
1.end speculation是什么意思。
end：
To bring to a conclusion.
使结束，终止
speculation：
Contemplation or consideration of a subject; meditation.
思索；沉思对某一问题的仔细考虑或思考；沉思
A conclusion, an opinion, or a theory reached by conjecture.
推论，推断通过推测得到的结论、观点或理论
Reasoning based on inconclusive evidence; conjecture or supposition.
推测根据不确定的证据的推理；推测或假定
那么end speculation，是不是说bring to a conclusion。

that 从句在句子中是修饰speculation，这样整句话的意思即：他们得出了一个结论an easy route existed.所以是存在的，与问题相反。
我是这么理解的，请指正。

我的理解是：他们否定（结束）了这样一个猜测：an easy coast-to-coast route的存在。不就是failure吗？
