I don't think the rent on long island is a lot cheaper than that in the city. Nassau County is closer to the city than Suffolk County, so the rent is still pretty high. And the sales tax is also a little bit higher than that in the city, if I recall correctly.
NY CPA requires 6 credits undergraduate business law or 4 credits graduate business law, however, its curriculum doesn't show any class in law. The credit requirement of auditing and taxation for sitting in the test at New York State is very vague. This school only offers 3 credits to auditing and 3 credits to taxation. Not sure whether it is enough. You are surely able to sit the CPA test as a candidate from other state, but I doubt the requirment of busines law might be universal.
Anyway, what I said is only FYI. If you are currently living close to LI, you might have a clearer idea than I. I haven't lived there, and I have no knowledge about the housing rent market.
