感觉这里的less是做名词，跟fewer没什么关系吧。而且less of certain pollutants than比较的是pollutants的多少，而不是emit pollutants的多少，所以没必要补上动词do，如果题目是 vehicles powered by natural gas emit less certain pollutants than 的话than后面就应该补上do vehichles powered by...因为emit这个动作是vehicle做的，请nn指正

1\在金山词霸上可看出，less有名词形式，而fewer无名词形式。介词of前应该是名词，所以只有less of,而不应该有fewer of.所以B和D应排除。

2\只要不引起歧义，不补谓语do也可以。本题从逻辑上看不会引起岐义，所以可不补do

3\比较对象要对等。比的是vehicles (powered by natural gas) emit less of...than those=vehicles (burning gasoline or dielel fuel)

1。less of可以跟单数，复数，不可数均可。

2。b最明显的错误：比较的对象不对。原题说的是烧天然气的车与烧汽油和柴油的车相比，而b说的是烧天然气的车与汽油和柴油的燃烧相比。肯定不对嘛

less在这里应该是adv，见Collins字典里的举例用法，同这个例子很类似：
 5   ADV  ADV with v

     If you do something less than before or less than someone else, you do it to a smaller extent or not as often.
          We are eating more and exercising less...
I see less of any of my friends than I used to.

类似pollutant, chemical的词即可作可数名词表种类，也可作不可数名词表量的多少。
题中的certain pollutants已经确定了污染物的种类，因此pollutant在此表示“每种污染物的量多少”，作不可数名词，因此应用less of

并且，A和C中都存在比较对象的明显错误，而E没有比较错误，并且保持了平行结构，因此选E。

有同学问到为什么E中没有do，值得注意的是，这种比较结构中的do/be是可以省略的。当不省略时，一般都会前置倒装，紧跟than之后。相反，如果than 与 do/be 之间相隔老远，阅读起来就很困难了。
