Like Vincent and Rhod mentioned, "group" is the subject of the that-clause, Not the "birds".

"a group" can include 230 species, "birds" should include >>> 230 species.

做题时还要考虑逻辑关系和题目含义，不是只靠语法结构的。

我也觉得指代应该看逻辑 优先指代句子的主语 但看到prep07 上面有一题 这样解释的：

在指代原则中

有一条就近指代原则:当一个句子中出现两个以上的复数名词时,复数代词优先指代离它近的复数

名词,这条原则用样适用于单数名词. 题目如下

同一句话中的代词一般指相同的事物，但并不代表两个it指代不一样就一定错，这条原则不是绝对的（manhattan有）如OGverbal 蓝本的92题it就指代不同物 不足处望大家多多指教
