虚拟语气的句型除了可以用if。。。之外还有以下两种其他形式 ①从句省略if,用倒装句式"were, had, should+主语"。例如:Were I in school again, I would work harder. Had you been here earlier, you would have seen him. Should there be a meeting tomorrow, I would come.②用介词短语代替条件状语从句。例如:Without air, there would be no living things. I would not have succeeded but for your help. 所以本题真是第二种用介词短语代替条件状语从句
关于it指代的疑问 their grip on Algeria was not ever secure if they did not hold it Algeria不是主语而是介词的宾语，为什么能够指代it呢？？ 这个想法是我看了og12-78那道题，里面说 fossils of the arm of a sloth found in....,made it the earliest known mammal..... og说it不能指代sloth因为 sloth是object of a preposition
把前面几楼都看了。下面解释一下自己的想法： A they 没有指代歧义，就是指代the french，gmat中集合名词用复数（貌似在manhattan上看到过有点记不清了）。要用虚拟语气，这个很明显，因为说的是要是不……结果会……，跟过去事实相反。所以was改成would be。it指MOROCCO，在ALGERIA之前，没有歧义。 B without 也可引起虚拟语气，这句话没什么错。 C没用虚拟语气，而且it指代不清楚。 D that后要加名词才能指代吧？单一个that你怎么说得清楚它指代的是一个主语还是一个前面一个句子呢。还有后面的句子重心完全不对，是说their grip would never be secure,而不是they could never be secure about their grip. 而且could never be secure about 不对，seems to indicate that they, themselves, would never have secure feelings about that grip (regardless of the strength of the grip itself). E tenses in E are technically wrong, but the correct way to use the verbs in E would involve a super-complicated verb tense that the GMAT never tests you on. The tenses actually would be correct if it were not for the “they assumed that” part that pushes this conditional into the hypothetical past. The pronoun “it” is definitely a problem, but there is plenty more that is wrong with E as well. （from manhattan forum)E这个解释，大家尽量理解了！
这里出现了倒装，从语序上来看这个倒装是正确的。“could their grip on Algeria be secure” 像“should you change your mind, let us know.” 但是在虚拟条件句中，倒装结构的形式是用来代替if的，而且需要倒装的应该是条件从句而不是主句。 所以这里的应该不是需要倒装的虚拟语气，正确的语序应该为“their grip on Algeria(主语) would never been secure if …” 。 另外的一个问题就是it的指代，因为被放在句末，而前面又出现了两个单数名词（Morocco和Algeria），指代不清。
巨傻的一道题，划线外用的assumed，就证明划线内的语义应该是没有实际发生的，应该用虚拟语气，这几个选项里用虚拟语气比较正常的只有B（当然有些货会问问什么B正常，B用without it，有的选项用they did not hold it，哪个是人类的表达方式？）如果你又问什么是人类的表达方式？我告诉你，如果意思相同，哪种表达方式最effective？显然是without it，如果有they did这个，多一个代词，我就得琢磨一下了！
