这句话的解释应该是针对A、B、E选项说的，carefully coordinating them with her narratives,的主语是Beatrix Potter，从句中coordinating的宾语them不能指代前面另一从句中的的book illustrations。不知道说的清楚没有

结合两位指点,我这样理解。Them和book illustrations 都是宾语成分，在同一个句子中，同一个词作为两种不同成分的宾语是否不合理，因此不能有这种指代。

没什么依据，等待批判。

我觉得AB中的them指代根据石林语法中来说，代词先于主句出现，则应该指代主句中的主语，而非作为状语的介词短语修饰语。可以想成介词短语作为一个独立的成分讲了一个位置，主句则应该另外叙述一件事，主谓宾也独立。

可能有点牵强。。。
