top phd?

此版虽然主要探讨mba,本人此贴想各位nn给些意见和信息,毕竟在国内各位对这个话题最有发言权。

本人背景:国内本科,BA;国作经验在multinational IT公司sales&marketing(focus on sales, in charge of regional marketing)。us top50 MBA.

thanks!

After you get a PhD, most likely you'll be teaching and researching full time. Professors are expected to teach and research. If your intent is to teach part-time, it is probably better for you to become an adjunct faculty, where a PhD is not necessary.

In your situation, I don't think PhD is worth the trouble. If you're that interested in research, the process is going to be painful. Most likely, you will not be able withstand the pressure that will be placed on you by the professors. (It is rumored that Harvard profs are nice to the MBAs, evil to the DBA/PhDs.)

As for the length of the program, it use to be that if you got a MBA from Harvard, the course work can be shorten. If your MBA is not from Harvard, it'll take you much much longer.

Just my 2 cents, some people would probably disagree with me.

I am in Canada right now. I am actually one of those people pondering if I want to go through the academic route or not. I have talked to quite a few professors/professionals about this topic. The response I got has been... mixed.

The one message I have been getting loud and clear is that unless you want to do research, there is no point in getting a PhD (great emphsis of the programs are placed on acquiring research methods. The people not interested in research usually cannot finish their dissertation).

I think the wise thing to do is to first figure out what type of instructor you want to become. An MBA plus an amazing work experience (something that I think you have/will have) will probably allow you to become a part-time instructor at one of the better Universities. If you ever want to teach full time, you'll need the PhD.

BTY, for those chinese people with a PhD, do they have business related PhDs? or are they Math/IT related? This is important, because you don't want to get the wrong PhD for the wrong reason. The answer to these questions may help you figure out if you want a PhD in Business or not.

I totally agree with watdahell.

It's going to be a great torture to study in a PhD program if you are not passionate about research. Also, for most PhD program in b-schools, it takes at least four to five years to complete a doctoral degree, and it doesn't really matter whether you have a master's degree or not. In my case, I already got two master's before I came into my current program(and my undergraduate major is also business-related), it still will take me 4.5-5 years to get my degree. So I believe that the case you talked about (done within 3 yrs with an MBA degree) is not the majority.

In my memory, only RIT allows students with MBA to waive course work.

the very thing that can sustain you through and after a decent PhD program with top B-school in U.S. is your intellectual curiosity, plus endurance of loneliness: 4-5 years to beat the PhD program, which is boring and stressful; then 5-6 years to secure a tenure; after which you've got the flexibility to follow your interests in industry.

better be crystal clear of what your life compulsion is, be specific. never lie to yourself. once done, just go for it, bearing in mind that there's no turning back. soft PhD programs with top B-schools worldwide, in many cases, start from over 30, an age when many things must be reckoned with. in short, this is the decision of committment.

看到weigangtang说很多phd开始于30岁以后,经过五年的学习,现在学校的竞争压力也不小,能顺利评上教授的也要熬好几年,不知大家对此怎么看?
