MA: master of arts
MS: master of science
Both MA and MS are very different from MBA; the former are more helpful if your final goal is applying to PhD.
For example, with an MA or MS in economics would be beneficial if you want to apply to PhD in finance, strategy, accounting or marketing (quantitative track); with an MA or MS in psychology would be helpful if you are interested in behavioral research (OB, human resources, marketing--consumer behavior track....). If you hold a master's in statistics, it is a huge plus for almost any kind of major in b-schools.
However, if you are not that sure about your real interest and career goals, chances are that you may realize that a PhD program is not right for you after getting into one. In that case, a MBA would be much more useful for you. So if you are not sure yet if you really enjoy doing research, my advice is: working for several years before you apply to schools, and make your choice after you understand yourself better.
Good luck! |
