大家都进了惯性思维的误区!

出题者利用我们找规律的习惯思维挖了个陷阱,不是所有like都是拿来做等价事物间对比的。

like还有形容词用法,which is the case here.

从意思跟逻辑出发,此句可以更清晰地改写成:

Members of the cheetah species, almost like clones in their similarity to one another, are especially vulnerable to disease because of homogeneity.

所以E最对

如果理解clones为被克隆出来的生物(生物与生物之间相似),那么就应该指这种相似性与cheetah种类的生物之间的同质性相似。似乎E是比较合理的。

以下是引用felix_zheng在2005-11-22 0:32:00的发言:Almost like clones in their similarity to one anoth ...

我觉得B的关键点不在于species的单复数形式,而是这个单词的词义, 根据有道柯林斯英汉双解的解释:“A species is a class of plants or animals whose members have the same main characteristics and are able to breed with each other”。是物种的意思,这里跟clones这样的个体含义是无法形成类比的,就是所谓的不是同一个kind的内容。
再看OG16,P772, 对于B选项的解释,“the resulting sentence opens with a reference to a plurality of individuals (to one another) , but confusingly identifies this with a single (collective)entity, a species."
Therefore, species 是单数,its指代的是species,这里不行的原因是因为它是个single (collective)entity。

看了那么多解释,这题我先开始选择了B,但是后来发现其实B是错误的,E是对的,然后这题很容易就因为like,把E个排除了,真的觉得考试的时候碰到这种类型的题目会中招。
首先,我觉得B错的理由是the cheetah species is especially vulnerable to disease because of its homogeneity, homogeneity的意思是:the quality or state of being all the same or all of the same kind. 所以用单数its来说一个物种的homogeneity是不太好的。their是更加好的说法,而且前面的like 里面也是复数,compare one another,其次就是这个its有指代disease的嫌疑,所以E是更加好的选项

贴一段外网的解释,很有道理,从句意的角度解释了为什么选E

Here our modifier is "Almost like clones in their similarity to one another". So what does "their" refer to? What are so similar that they are "like clones"? Based on the sentence, it would make the most sense for "their" to refer to "cheetahs" - cheetahs are so similar (or "homogenous") that they are vulnerable to disease. So we want to find a sentence that puts "cheetahs" closest to our modifier.
We can rule out A, C, and D because "homogeneity" is not at all what we want - homogeneity is almost like clones? Doesn't make sense.

B is a little trickier. Here, "the cheetah species" is our subject. However, "The cheetah species is almost like clones in their similarity to one another" doesn't actually make much sense. We see that "species" is singular (it can be plural, but here it's followed by singular verb "is"), but the pronoun in the modifier, "their", is plural. It also isn't clear what "one another" would be? The species is like clones with other species of animal? Other species of cheetah? So we can rule out B.

This leaves us with E, which tells us that members of the cheetah species are almost like clones.
