That's what I had done when I was applying to schools quite a long while ago. In addition to those you mentioned (e.g., faculty research areas and publications, program alumni placements, and profiles of currently enrolled students), also pay attention to each program's requirements, principally coursework requirements and teaching load.

请问如何看学校的招生偏好，其实同作为工作党觉得比较难的是准备语言考试和gre

我相信多年在职党应该都会面临这个问题，我的思路是尽量找做过TA/某节课成绩比较好/未来研究方向和教授比较贴切的，可能愿意帮忙写推荐信的概率会高些（还没实践，纯yy）

通常学校都会有Program Website，里面除了比较basic的Admission Requirements以外，部分院校还会有FAQ的link，里面可能会透露一些preference，另外部分院校也会有Candidate Profile，里面可以看下在读PhD Candidate的大体信息，包括国籍/背景/研究方向等等
